Join the Essendon Historical Society for a two-course dinner with guest speaker, Gary Presland speaking on In Kulin Country: Indigenous Life & Culture in the Essendon Region: At the time of European settlement, the Essendon area was part of the estate of an Indigenous clan called Wurundjeri willam. This clan was a part of the Kulin nation, which meant its members were connected to clans as far away as the Murray River. Archaeologist, historian and writer, with particular interests in both pre-contact First Nations history and natural history in the Melbourne area, Dr Gary Presland will detail the nature of these connection, and also elaborate on how the Wurundjeri were sustained by their environment, and how they honoured and cared for their country. He is the author of several published books on these subjects, including First people: the Eastern Kulin of Melbourne, Port Phillip and central Victoria, and The place for a village: how nature has shaped the city of Melbourne. Gary is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society of Victoria, and an Honorary Associate of Museum Victoria. Copies of Dr Presland’s publications will be available for sale.
