Sunday 20 November was a very special day for the local residents of the district, for it was on this day that steam returned to Essendon, courtesy of the members of the Rotary Club of Essendon. Activity commenced very early on that morning, as a team of volunteers from the Rotary Club and the Essendon Historical Society erected a marquee, a fruit and drink stall, a sausage sizzle and other stalls outside the Essendon Railway Station in Russell Street to meet the needs of the public as they gathered to experience a trip in a steam train. There were five train journeys during the day, planned to leave from Platform 1, between 9.45 am and 6.20 pm. The first two, to Box Hill and Albion Broadmeadows (via the Goods Loop) were completely booked out prior to departure through the www.trybooking website. The afternoon journeys were to Wyndham Vale, Box Hill again, and Newport (one way only ).
