Built in the period 1880 to 1892, the mansions or large homes (villas) featured in the book were selected based on their grandeur, architectural features, or the personal stories of the occupants.

Properties in these suburbs include:

Aberfeldie

CIydebank (Ave Maria College) and Homewood (Resurrection House) as well as the former Tooronga.

Ascot Vale

Fernhill and Rothwell, both demolished.

Essendon

Ardoch Towers, Carlowrie, Earlsbrae Hall (Lowther Hall), Ellimatta (Napperby), Gillespie’s Mansion (St Columba’s College), Gowrie, Hazzards’ Home (Penleigh & Essendon Grammar School) and North Park.

Demolished houses are Ngarveno, Remuera, Westgreen and Woodlands.

Flemington

Emilyville and Glencairn plus the former Newmarket Haven (Darjeeling).

Moonee Ponds

Belmont (Charworth), Buckley Lodge (Homerton, Clarwich, Almora), Dunoon (Saddleworth), Park Lodge, Rosina (Roseneath) Stanhope and Wahgunyah (Penleigh & Essendon Grammar School). Former homes featured are Craigallan, St. Aidan’s and Tower House (Chantrell).
