Now on Trove
The Essendon Historical Society (EHS) has arranged for the digitisation of the Essendon and Flemington Chronicle newspaper from 3 March 1882 to 9 March 1894. The 1883 issues are missing, and we would be very interested in these if copies exist.
EHS considers the digitisation of past newspapers for publication on Trove as a priority. This will greatly aid research into early history. The paper contains news as well as advertisements such as:
The four page newspaper commenced as the “Chronicle” on 3 Mar 1882 and by the next issue, 10 Mar 1882, it had been renamed the Essendon and Flemington Chronicle. The publisher was W.G and A.E Rae of 35 Elizabeth St North, Melbourne and 13 Hawke St West Melbourne.
This project has been supported financially by the EHS John Williams Bequest, Moonee Valley Libraries and a Minor Project Grant, awarded by The English-Speaking Union (Victoria Branch) in 2022.
